This year, fourth grade will use a hybrid of Guided Reading, Whole Group Novels, and Reader's Workshop formats in our literature program. Students will be formally and informally assessed throughout the year using the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, ERB scores, reading portfolios, and our own observations of student performance in engagement, fluency and intonation, print work strategies, comprehension, and conversational skills. These assessments will inform our daily mini-lessons as well as reading groups and independent reading projects. We plan to include the following units of study in this year's curriculum:
- Character Development in Fiction Texts - Theme/Big Ideas in Literature - Inference or "Reading Between the Lines" - Historical Fiction - Novel Forms (Graphic Novels and Novels in Prose) - Mini Units in Mystery and Poetry
Important Items to Note: - Every night, students should be reading for at least 20 minutes. - In addition to our literature program, we will analyze nonfiction texts and their structures on a weekly basis.
